Tourist Favorite
Zihua and Ixtapa boast lots of touristy restaurants, nightclubs and stores.
If you’ve already been there, done that in Playa Troncones, the Zihuatanejo area has tons more activities to offer, just 20 minutes away.
Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa are fun for a day trip or two, but Troncones is the really special beach around here. If you should get tired of the beach (gasp!) or maybe just too sunburned, take a day off from the glory of our beach and had to the big city.
Spend a day shopping, eating, dodging tourists in the hustle and bustle and fun. Remeber, you still have to get some gifts for the folks back home, and maybe some silver jewelry, and some fresh roasted Guerrero coffee? And lunch with a world- class view, too.
The area around Troncones has a lot to offer, in case you get sick of all that perfect beach (or if you just need a day out of the sun). The best part— afterwards, you get to escape back to your pristine, world-class beach in quiet time-warp Troncones. Ideally in time for sunset margaritas on our beach.

And mucho mas! Check out what Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo have to offer:
Zihua and Ixtapa boast lots of touristy restaurants, nightclubs and stores.
The Costa Grande is world famous for its gorgeous beaches and breathtaking scenery (especially Troncones).
Movie theaters in both Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo
Plenty of local artists and galleries in Zihua.
Upscale breakfast and lunch spot for locals, off the road to la Ropa. Varied authentic Mexican menu. The jugo verde and enchiladas Suizas are perfect.
If you’re just dying for a the change of pace of a crowded, not very clean, touristy beach, visit La Ropa. We dont’ recommend actually going in the water, though.
El Mangle restaurant, on La Ropa beach (take a cab for easy access) is on an island in a lagoon full of iguana, birds and real, live crocodiles. The food may not be memorable, but the other diners sure are.
From the artisan’s market near the bay to funky boutiques to luxury stores, nearby Zihua and Ixtapa offer a variety of shops.
Surf breaks abound in the area. Semi-famous breaks in Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, as well as Saladita, the Ranch, etc. Check out our Surf Guidee.
Diving is available in the area, though surf areas don’t generally make the best dive spots.
For some adrenaline and an incredible view… Fly, be free!
Year-round surf breaks abound, both in Troncones and nearby.
Our favorite boutiques: The quality traditional Mexican mask and clothing stores in Casa Marina, right on Zihua bay. (Next to El Cafecito)
Zihua has some wonderful restaurants. Our favorite affordable mediterranean restaurant with a world-class view: Il Mare. (Take a cab. Parking’s impossible.)
Great little coffee shop right on Zihua harbor. A cool, breezy respite with a view, after the rigors of the artisan’s market. Sip the lemonade frappe while watching the fishermen work. (In Casa Marina)
This clifftop restaurant serves up quality, well-priced mediterranean food, and a world-class view. Don’t miss it! (Take a cab, cause parking’s a pain.)
Two golf courses in Ixtapa, just 15 minutes away.
From the dock near the bay where the fishermen hang out, catch a cheap water taxi to Las Gatas. Several often very crowded restaurants await for a beachy lunch. And a nature preserve that’s often closed.
Zihuatanejo has a Sam’s club, the Mega Soriana grocery store and the big central Mercado, to fill your food shopping needs. Ixtapa’s La Europea is the best liquor and import store around—for quality wines at good prices, or that special 7 Leaguas tequila.
