What we’re doing about the coronavirus

(Which, thankfully, is not a major issue in Troncones, due to our isolation and swift action by the town.)

Yay! Casa Oasis is open (to limited numbers of guests.)

Please email us with any questions or to book a beach escape!

We want you to know we’re taking this very seriously. We’re taking precautions, even though there’s probably way more of it where you’re from than in our sparsely populated beach community, or on our practically private beach.

In fact, the Oasis may be the perfect place to hide from it all. Sunlight, fresh air, and humidity are death to viruses! And Tequila doesn’t do them any favors, either.

Upgraded WIFI!

Get more info on our new WIFI speeds, so you can work from the Oasis.

We’re on it.

The Coronavirus has changed the entire world — even tiny, tucked-away, time-warp Troncones. Folks in the village wear masks. Government patrols pass through to make sure restaurants are not too full. For a time, they even closed the beaches, even though our gorgeous, empty beaches are pretty much always socially distanced.

If you’re desperate for a sunny get away, join the club and head to Casa Oasis Troncones! Troncones is a safer destination than most, due to its proximity to the US and Canada (shorter flight times) and its isolated, semi-rural, windswept area. Also, all that fresh flowing air means less incubation: one benefit of living largely without air conditioning.

Here’s what Fodor’s has to say on the subject:

“Options are slim these days for Americans wanting an exotic beach vacation to socially-distance themselves from the realities of 2020. Countries around the world are leery about opening their borders to U.S. travelers. The one main exception to that is our neighbor to the south. Mexico is waiting with open arms for Americans to return to their beaches. Commercial flights between the two counties never stopped, hotels reopened in June after a short closure period, and Mexico is one of the few countries that does not have a mandated quarantine once international travelers arrive.”

(Of course, in Troncones, you won’t find a hotel or vacation rental with the “Safe Travel Stamp” they mention, as there are no huge hotel chains, only small businesses like ours.)

And here, we think they might have gotten this from our website: “One of the safest places to be during the pandemic is outdoors. The COVID-19 virus is spread primarily from person to person through respiratory droplets released into the air when talking, coughing, or sneezing. According to the Mayo Clinic, when a person is outside, fresh air is constantly moving, helping to disperse those droplets making it less likely for someone to breathe in enough of them to become infected.

With idyllic weather, long stretches of near-empty beaches, open-air restaurants, and outdoor excursions, Mexico is a perfect destination for those looking to spend time outdoors in any circumstances. These days with visitation at historically low levels, it is easy to naturally socially distance from other travelers.”

At the Oasis, you’re on a practically private beach in a very sparsely populated area, in open architecture where there’s tons of fresh air… Still, we’re doing even more than usual to keep you happy and healthy, and to ensure your best beach vacation ever!

Our expanded cleaning, disinfecting, and safety protocols

Rest assured, Casa Oasis has instituted cleaning, disinfecting, and safety protocols recommended by The World Tourism Council global and AirBnB, including:

The WTTC Protocols we’ve met (yep, all of them):

DELIVERING A SAFE EXPERIENCE
As Short-Term Rentals operators work to deliver a safe experience for their guests through enhanced cleanliness and hygiene best practices, they should have:

✔️ Adopted processes focused on enhanced sanitation, disinfection and deep cleaning practices as well as increase their cleaning/disinfection frequency:

✔️ Selected disinfecting products recommended by health authorities

✔️ Provided revisited guidance to the cleaning team with a specific focus on high-frequency touch points within the property, including bedrooms, common areas, washrooms and kitchens, including cutlery and utensil sanitisation, where applicable.

✔️ Enhance cleaning frequency as appropriate.

✔️ Removed extraneous items such as vases and artifacts

✔️ Considered providing guests with the ability to opt-out of accommodation cleaning service during their stay.

✔️ Provided guests with recommended physical distancing etiquette

✔️ Approved disinfecting products made available at sanitation stations to guests in the form of alcohol-based hand sanitiser at entrance of short-term rental

✔️ Encouraged routine and proper hand washing, providing paper towels if possible

✔️ Encouraged use of personal protective items such as disposable gloves, aprons, gowns or facial coverings for staff

✔️ Implemented guest processes relating to information sharing and physical distancing

✔️ Limited physical interaction when providing guests with keys, ideally in a contactless manner by offering self- check-in and check-out. Employ online or contactless payment if possible

For good measure, we’ve added these measures:

  • Distanced cleaning (while you’re out, with time for airing out), only when requested. (You can opt out  of cleaning entirely, and nobody will enter your flat while you’re staying with us.)
  • Limited numbers of guests
  • More leeway for cancellations due to Covid
At Casa Oasis, we take our guests’ safety very seriously.

Beachy Flu Fighters
  • Fresh fruits, veggies, and chile are great sources of vitamin C

This good stuff is all over Troncones! Fresh pineapple, papaya, and mango (con chile y limon), a margarita or two…

  • Sunlight kills airborne bacteria and viruses

No shortage of sunshine here, ever

  • Humidity kills the flu virus.

That lovely, soft, humid sea air? Plumping your skin and killing the flu virus. (Seriously. Google it.)

  • Fresh air, exercise, and happiness are good for you

So your beach trip is really a preventative measure!

  • Vacations boost immunity

R&R don’t just boost productivity, they’re good for your health.

  • Mexican proverb (ish): A tequila a day keeps the doctor away

(Can’t hurt, anyway.) Alcohol is a great germ killer. And limes = vitamin c.

  • Do yourself multiple favors: Avoid crowds, take a break from your germy devices, and enjoy our great outdoors

Our practically private beach is seriously therapeutic.

  • Playing in the waves is a great way to clean out your sinuses

    (Ask any surfer.)

Vacation Rental Owner’s Mini Soap Box:

Get travel insurance, please!Take responsibility for your travel plans and changes therein, instead of expecting a small business to absorb huge losses, through no fault of their own.

Travel Insurance is generally quite affordable and protects much more than the cost of your stay.

Imagine your loss x 10-30. That’s what we’re looking at in this pandemic. That’s not even considering all the bookings that won’t even be made, with people afraid to travel. Our site is getting less than half the visits it got this time last year.

Vacation rentals are very hard hit in this, and we’re not all giant corporations who can survive it.

It’s all very well and good for the CEO’s of billion-dollar companies like VRBO and AirBnB to recommend that small businesses (the people who create and maintain the service off of which they’ve made their billions) offer refunds of trips booked months (or more) ago. And, yes, they’re graciously offering to forgo their 15%-ish fees and let small businesses absorb 100% losses. How thoughtful!

Perhaps larger business can do it. Companies that have 17 rental properties, etc. Those of us who own individual properties (lovingly hand-built from overgrown tropical lots), would go out of business in a season. And nobody is going to bail us out.

Imagine a large part of your income suddenly being revoked, months later?

Individual rental owners are not making the big bucks, either, believe us. And many of us are freaking out and looking for alternate sources of income as I type.

So please, get travel insurance and read our policies carefully before you book.

  • Be sure to get “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage, and make sure Covid cancellations are covered.
  • Shop around and and read the fine print: there are various restrictions and limits you’ll want to know about before you buy and before you book.
  • World Nomads Travel Insurance, for example (at the time we write this) does not have a Covid-19 exclusion for US residents. They cover some expenses due to Covid cancellations. Again, read the fine print before you buy!

casa oasis troncones logo

If you decide to cancel, we’ll try to work with you, but we cannot abandon our protective policies just when things get really bad. That’s when we need them most, in order to live on to offer you a stay another day. Which we hope to do, with utter reliability, for another decade, at least.

And hopefully, we’ll all make it through this crisis!

Our Cancellation Policies

Our cancellation policies

Our policies on cancellations and refunds are the product of much trial and error in our nearly 20 years experience in the Mexico vacation rental business. Due to the tiny-beach-destination and book-way-ahead nature of the Troncones rental market, they are very strict.

As much as we’d like to be able to help, Casa Oasis cannot be responsible for events in our guests’ lives. Or for major world events. We book far in advance and then save your spot, turning away many other potential guests. Last minute bookings are rare in Troncones, so if you do cancel, we lose income through no fault of our own. (Thus, our carefully thought-out policies.)

Still, our cancellation policy is more generous than most. We will refund whatever we are able to re-rent, minus an administrative fee. (We have no interest in profiting twice off a cancelled and re-booked stay, like many rentals do.)

Please be sure to check out our policies, as you agree to them upon booking with us. We will never cancel a guest’s stay. So, we need to be protected when guests do have to cancel.

And if you’ve already booked with us, don’t panic… Keep reading.

As if a pandemic wasn’t enough, now you have to cancel your vacation?

Talk about terrible! It is a gigantic bummer. But don’t panic. If you can’t make your reservation, contact us ASAP. We will work with you. We all need to get through this together. (Well, together but at least 6 feet apart—a little pandemic humor never killed anyone, right? Ok, so anxiety leads to bad jokes.)

First and foremost, we realize this is a very anxious time for everyone. We do not want to add to our guests’ anxiety and we do want to encourage them to make the decision that’s best for them. Together, we’ll work something out. For those of you who reserved with us months ago, we’ve developed some creative alternatives for Covid cancellations… Email us.

How to stay healthy while traveling —Tips from Dr. Internet

According to the CDC:

“The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

“Can someone spread the virus without being sick?

  • People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
  • Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

“Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.”

Some very helpful (and occasionally hilarious)
travel/health advice from Forbes Magazine.

(We often find that humor helps the medicine go down.)

On airplane travel risks:

“But let’s be clear what the real risks may be. For example, how much of a risk is the recycled air in airplanes? Well, the air does go through HEPA filters. HEPA stands for “high efficiency particulate air [filter]” and is supposed to filter out at least 99.97% of microbes, dust, pollen, mold, and any airborne particles that are 0.3 microns (µm) in size. The filter may even be more efficient at filtering particles that are smaller or larger than 0.3 µm, such as French fries.

“Assuming that the HEPA filter is working properly then you may not have to worry so much about the air nozzle overhead that’s creating a mini-tornado on your face. Plus, SARS-CoV2 can only travel so far in the air. It’s not as if they have little wings. Viruses don’t drink Red Bull. Instead, they hitch rides on respiratory droplets that come out of an infected person through coughing, sneezing, spitting, or the like. These droplets can travel up to three to six feet from the person.”

Some common sense precautions:

“Then there are the various surfaces on the plane. You are probably more likely to catch respiratory viruses like coronaviruses and flu viruses through touching things that have been contaminated with the virus. That includes body parts like hands or surfaces like seat belt buckles and Baby Yoda figurines that have been touched by someone infectious. Quite a few of the surfaces in an airplane cabin would be considered “high touch,” meaning that different people touch them frequently. These include tray tables, seats, seat belts, video monitors, and that crypt-like pocket in the back of the seat in front of you. People shove who knows what in those pockets, including magazines, wrapping papers, used tissues, and maybe even a doughnut.

“That’s why limiting what you touch, washing your hands thoroughly and frequently, and not touching your face with unwashed hands will be more important than holding your breath for the entire duration of the six hour or so flight. (By the way, you can only hold your breath for a few minutes before you pass out, so don’t even try it.) Of course, not touching your face is easier said than done… Your face can feel like a gigantic planet with a massive gravitational pull on your fingers. Therefore, try keeping your hands occupied like putting them in your pockets, typing on a computer, or flashing gang signs to yourself.”

On the joys of hand sanitizer:

“Hand sanitizer can help but make sure you use it properly. Use enough sanitizer to cover all parts of your hands. Then massage your hands together as if they were the main characters in a romance novel. Keep up the rubbing until they become dry. Recite the alphabet while doing this so that you know that you’ve gone long enough, because isn’t that what lovers in a romance novel do?”

Why washing your hands is the best defense:

“Washing your hands with soap and water, if done properly, is always better than just using hand sanitizer. However, airplane bathrooms may be areas of really high touch, in more ways than one. A lot can go on in a bathroom and a decent percentage of it is not good, from a microbe standpoint, that is. The words “airplane bathroom” and “luxurious” usually don’t go together. While in a cramped airplane bathroom, it can be difficult to limit your touching, especially when turbulence makes it feel like you are an ingredient in a smoothie being made.”

And what we have been recommending for years on our policies page: Travel Insurance. It’s generally affordable, and that way you’re taking responsibility and not expecting a small business to be financially responsible for your change in plans.

“Consider purchasing travel insurance or a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policy to cover you in case plans have to change. As always, read the fine print of such policies, which may not always be so fine.”

Mr. Lee’s final wise, yet witty words:

“If you do have to travel by air, no need to be paranoid. “Be paranoid” is rarely the recommendation for any situation. Just take the precautions mentioned above, which are probably precautions that you should always take when traveling by plane regardless of whether a novel virus is circulating.”

Why Casa Oasis Troncones?

For starters, look at all that sunshine and fresh air…

Pristine Troncones beach in the afternoon
1

Our location, location, location! Casa Oasis is located at the secluded end of the prettiest and quietest beach in Troncones. Practically private, you’ll usually have our beach all to yourself. We really recommend at least one solitary sunrise walk.

2

Nestled in Nature, that’s us! We dont’ mind that you can’t see us for the trees. In Troncones, nature is all around you. Even more so at Casa Oasis Troncones. Indoor outdoor living, wide open spaces, lush gardens, instant access to the beach and its wildlife. Nature with a capital N—That’s what it’s all about.

3

The best swimming hole in town, seriously. The most reliable swimming and boogie boarding spot on this beach, sandy and rock free most of the year. (Except during major summer swells.)

You’ll notice people in the know come here to swim from up and down the playa.

In fact, that’s how we found this location—first, we found the magic swim spot, then the magic lot.

4

Year Round Surf (this picture was taken at low tide on a very calm day). Apart from the many nearby surf breaks, there’s Casa Oasis’ own Troncones surf break. Fast, shallow, elusive and best for short boards, catch it if you can. You’ll have the edge on the competition, since you can see if it’s breaking from your very own beachfront sofa.

Our beach is also a good place to practice surf basics, like standing up and falling, since it’s long, flat and rock-free sandy (except for big surf season—then, it’s big fun for advanced surfers).

5

Don’t forget to look up! You’ll never forget the Troncones night sky. The Milky Way hangs out right above Casa Oasis Troncones. Seriously. And there really are few experiences better than lying on the beach, under a full moon or watching a meteor shower with a nice bottle of wine. While you’re at it, enjoy a warm night swim and look to the edge of the waves for the area’s ubiquitous and gorgeous bioluminescence. Stars in your footsteps!

6

Crystal clear seawater—the majestic Pacific, clean as can be. Sparkling waters are not the norm on all beaches. Most beach towns, even Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, just South of us, being highly developed and less eco-conscious, are at least somewhat polluted.

At Casa Oasis Troncones, we absolutely cherish the sparkling-clean, see-your toes-in-chest-deep-water ocean right in front of our house. (And we know all the little fishies we see like it, too.)

7

Our practically private golden sandy beach. Normally you’d pay top luxury dollar to get such a gorgeous, empty beach all to yourself. Not at Casa Oasis Troncones. Thanks to the Troncones Secret Beach Time Warp Factor (SBTWF), you can afford to spend serious time on a seriously secluded beach. How many times have you been the only person walking or running down a beach?

Isn’t it about time?

8

And more nature! The undeveloped Troncones hills snuggle up to us, providing rampant greenery, lovely cool breezes, good ocean view hiking, and even some gigantic caverns.

Yes, Virginia, there’s spelunking in Troncones, too.

9

Close, but not too close. Downtown Troncones (all 2 blocks of it) is just a 15-minute beach stroll south of us. (Longer if you inevitably stop for a dip or to look at shells, or to watch for breaching whales.) At casa Oasis Troncones, you get a desert-island secluded beach just minutes from restaurants and stores. Just like how, with Troncones, you get time-warp beach village life just minutes from big(ish) city amenities and an international airport. The best of both worlds, like we said!

Hubbub is thataway –>

Stay healthy and travel safely!
